It’s that time of year again! The Diversity Visa Lottery for fiscal year 2026 (“DV-2026”) is live and has begun accepting registrations effective Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 12:00 noon (EDT). The registration period for the DV Lottery, as it’s commonly referred to, concludes on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 12:00 noon (EST). Entries are only accepted electronically--paper entries through the US Postal Service will not be accepted. Keep in mind that the “law allows only one entry per person during each registration period.” Submitting multiple applications will result in disqualification, not better odds, and, yes, “the Department of State uses sophisticated technology to detect multiple entries.” It is recommended that foreign nationals not wait until the end of the period to apply as heavy demand could cause delays on the website.

Univision: “In Trump era, immigration lawyers recommend everyone carry ID, no matter your status”

After a Border Patrol agent questioned two US citizens in Montana because they were speaking Spanish, legal experts are now recommending that naturalized citizens, legal permanent residents, and undocumented individuals carry identification with them in the event that it is requested by authorities. While the women were able to demonstrate to the officer that they were US citizens and were not arrested, many immigration advocates found the encounter disturbing. Jaime Barrón, an immigration attorney in Dallas, Texas, says that “simply speaking in another language cannot be an illegal act, that could be discrimination.”

NPR: "Under A Trump Proposal, Lawful Immigrants Might Shun Medical Care"

The Trump administration is considering proposing a policy change that could have the result of discouraging immigrants seeking permanent residency (i.e., a Green Card) from using government-supported health care. Under the administration's draft plan, an immigrant in valid legal status could be prevented from obtaining permanent residency if they have used Medicaid, a subsidized Obamacare plan, food stamps, tax credits or other non-cash government benefits, according to a draft of the plan published by The Washington Post. Legal immigrants could even be prevented from obtaining a Green Card if their US-citizen child uses such benefits.

NPR: “Immigrants Are Scrambling To Submit Petitions For Family Members To Come to U.S.”

As President Trump continues his call to limit family-based immigration, an increasing number of  immigrants residing in the US are filing petitions to bring eligible family members to America, in case an immigration bill restricting family reunification is eventually passed. Currently, the US immigration system allows for family reunification (what President Trump derisively calls “chain migration,”) where in certain cases Green Card holders or citizens can sponsor eligible relatives to come to the US. President Trump has proposed limiting family-based immigration to immediate family members, including spouses and minor children, and restricting it for parents, siblings, and adult children.
