Immigration Film Fails

When you’re watching dangerous stunts on TV, there is usually a warning that the viewer should “not try this at home.” I’d like to think of this post as a warning to foreign nationals (and Americans, for that matter) that certain movies do not realistically depict immigration situations. By all means watch these films for their dramatic plots, intrigue, romantic moments, and even comedic value, but do not rely on them for learning how the US immigration system works. We have provided grades, not for the quality of the movie but for how well they manage the immigration facts.

With all of the excitement, I am inspired to reminisce about my own favorite films—and influenced by my profession–specifically my favorite immigration film: The Terminal.

Awards season is upon us! Every year the American awards season captures the attention and excitement of people around the globe as the women and men of the entertainment industry are recognized for their outstanding performances in television and film. In recognition of this special time of year—and since we are an immigration law firm—we thought it would be fun to celebrate the immigration themes in this year’s films nominated for Oscars (sorry Golden Globes et al!) as well as the contributions of many foreign nationals to American film and television.
